From the air, the valley resembles a snake and in ancient times, the area used to be known as Snakestow (Snake-Market). The town would be lined with local traders selling handbags, shoes, waistcoats and car seat covers until it was discovered that none of their wares was in fact snakeskin at all. The secret that had been kept for centuries was out. The snakes of Snakestow were in fact a local river dwelling species similar to the alligator that are thought to be extinct. There is the occassional "sighting".
